It's just like all of the different accents in the different regions in the USA. There are several different accents in Canada. I agree that Newfoundlanders have very thick accents. That is part of what makes them unique. Newfoundland English is the closest surviving form to Old English. We studied it in my Linguistics class.

What is an "accent"???
A variation in the pronunciation of certain words
of an established language....Well, that being the case, since the English language originated in England, then everyone pronouncing words and phrases differently than "Queen's English" has an accent. I am of French ancestry. I speak French fluently....but not the Parisian French....I, therefore have an accent. All Americans speak with an accent....all different variations of the English language.
Therefore.....yes all Canadians speak with an accent, same as all the Americans.

no we don't have an accent you do *s* actually people from Newfoundland have a very thick accent and words that are Newfie slang, that all of us have a hard time understanding. The rest of Canada other than Quebec which is French speaking is usually easily understood. And none of us live in igloos unless they are Inuit going back to the old ways while out hunting.

no more so than asking if Americans have accents. Not as pronounced as English speaking people from England, Australia, New Zealand etc.We may pronounce words differently from one Province to the next like Americans do State by State. Places Like Newfoundland has more of a generalized accent almost like a Texan or Southerner. Most people in Quebec will because they speak a whole different language(French) but overall no.
And for those who say we pronounce about like aboot such a "Canadiana" urban legend.I know of no one that says it like that.

I was born in Oakville, Ontario (outside Toronto) and raised in Windsor, Ontario. As a youth I'd visit family in Toronto only to be told I had an American accent!

Accents can be regional or cultural. Canada is a multicultural Heinz 57 so you'll find a great deal of different accents all over this great Nation!

Of course. Everyone who speaks has an accent. Although Newfoundland is known for it's unique dialect (it's not just an accent - vocabulary and sentence structure are significantly different), other regions also have distinct speech patterns. Just to name a few, people from The Ottawa Valley, Calgary, and areas of Nova Scotia all have accents that distinguish them from other areas of Canada.

Everyone has an accent. A province can have people that have different accents on one side than the other. everybody talks about newfoundland, well i go to school here and have witnessed so many accents. people from the outports seem to have a real irish/english accent and very thick, but people from say st.john's can be understood. my accent is cape breton and is very similar to newf. some pei accents sound like newf too. its just from irish/ english decents.

Everyone, everywhere has an accent. Just think about people in the USA.....Texans speak differently than people in New York. People in New York speak differently than people in Arkansas.

So, yes, people in Canada would have different accents from some Americans.

i think that everybody in the whole world has an accent.

its a particular way in which people talk from diffrent places, and yes YOU have an accent and all your friends do as well you just cant here it cause youve grown up with it, so i would imagine depending on how close u live to Canada would determine how strong the accent sounds to you.

Yes. Accents are regional in every country. Also, many Canadians are 1st generation - so they have an accent.

Our accent is proper english and good use of grammar. We don't talk slowly, with a drawl, or use a lot of slag like "ain't" or "y'all".

Depending on where in Canada, it ranges from French in Quebec, to very well spoken english almost everywhere else.

I came from Montreal about 50 years ago as a young child. Just today one of my clients said to me. "Where are you from"? I said "Why"?
He heard me say the word
about with the accent as ABOOT.
That is very Canadian.

Certain expressions like
"Is that right A?"

Canadians have excellent grammar in general.

yes especially in Newfoundland, basically it is the same accent though out Canada , but we have different accent then American people

In the past few months I've travelled to both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and I can tell you the accents are very different both from each other and from mine (I'm from Ontario - francophone but perfectly bilingual).

Of course, there is the famed Canadian "aboot", which actually is more "aboat".

And of course, on the French side of things, you have about five different accents in Quebec, and Acadians have different accents depending on whether they're from Southeast New Brunswick, North New Brunswick, Cape Breton or Southwestern Nova Scotia...

For us canadians, we think other people are the ones with the accent, just like i'm sure you do. it varies over the country. i had a friend that came from newfoundland, and i couldn't understand a think she said. my boyfriend (american) and his friends say i don't pronouce all the words that i say. so they would say that i have an accent.

yaes there is because there are a lot of crime and accidents there.
