and for the chick who says she (cali) and hubby (eastern CA) sound alike, you're either deaf, or sound nothing like your origins. being from neither one, both have an accent to me, and they're not similar at all.

Everybody has an accent. It only becomes apparent when you go somewhere where the common accent is different.

Accent is a manner in which words are pronounced. So everyone has an accent, including people from Toronto.

If your question is whether Toronto has a distinctive dialect, the question is more difficult, yes and no at the same time: Toronto's dialect is very close to other West Canadian cities (e.g. Ottawa). But since people are exposed to different cultures, many words from other languages are generally understood by people here. If you get out of the city, people are less likely to know them. So Toronto is unique that way.

"There's an unmarked, generic aspect to the Canadian accent," says Chambers. "It doesn't have vowels that wobble a lot, and all the consonants are in place. It's very well behaved, in the phonetic sense, much like the accent spoken in the American Midwest. Those are parts of the world where people breathe clean air and think clean thoughts. And so that's why they associate the accent with honesty and trust." Perhaps that explains why a 2002 Pew Research poll found ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, who hails from Toronto, one of the most believable public figures in America. probably, since toronto is so diverse...

I am from San Jose, California, my husband is from Toronto and we sound exactly the same. On planes people always think I am Canadian. If you go east or west from TO, that is where I seem to find accents.
