Do u need a passport to drive into canada?

We are planning a weekend trip to niagara falls and staying at sheraton on the falls which is on canada side. So do we need passports or can we just bring 2 forms of id.

Depends on when and how you're traveling and your nationality of course.If you are an American citizen and traveling to Canada by land or sea (before june 2009) you need a government issued photo id such as a valid driver's license and your original birth certificate.You need a valid passport if you're traveling by air.On or after June 09 you must present a VALID PASSPORT regardless of your nationality and how you get in here "by land,air or sea" Hope it helps and have a great time in advance :)

As of June 1, 2009, everyone from every country that comes to Canada by air, land and sea needs a passport.

Not until June 1, 2009 will passports be required. You will need legimate ID, however.

Before June 1 if you are travelling by land, you do not need a passport. After that it's valid passport only. That said, as you will be in another country, your passport is the best way to get help if anything unfortunate should happen. It is the easiest way to identify yourself as an American citizen and avail yourself of the assistance of your government without undue waiting while your citizenry is checked.
