Passports will not be required for LAND travel to and from Canada until June I, 2009. For now, you need your birth certificate and a photo i.d. See below to read the law for yourself. |

I live 12 miles from Niagara Falls, At this time you do NOT need a passport to enter and exit Canada if you are driving but you will need picture ID for adults and birth certificates for everyone. Applying for passports was getting backed up and the need for a passport has been put off. So for now you are ok but I would get a passport for any future trips. Our cousins were just there Tuesday and they had passports and it was really easy for them to pass back and forth. A military ID, drivers license or nondrivers license work for adults |

Are you driving in from Buffalo, NY? If you have to cross the border it's best you have a passport but it's not required. For now all you need is a picture I.D. and birth certificate or proof of citizenship. If you're already in Canada then NO you don't need anything...it's an open area and you only have to pay for parking. If you're up for some fun try the haunted houses there ! |

Yes, apparently now you do need a passport to go to Canada or Mexico, if you fly, but not if you drive or go by sea. BUT that will all change next summer. Then you will need a passport no matter which way you travel. It wasn't necessary at all before 9/11 happened.

Well, it matters which side you would like, yes if you are an american citizen and want to see the canadian side. But you can also go to new york and see the american side. But if your in canada same thing except backwards.
I do prefer going to the canadian side, much nicer. Been there four times, wonderful. |

I didn't even read all the answers. Ig ot sick of the wrong answer being given within the first 3,
By land you do not need a passport crossing the border in EITHER direction. you need proof of citizenship and government issued photo id (example: birth certificate and driver's license). This goes for travel by land and sea. If you are flying you need a passport and ONLY if you are flying.
In June 2009 the law will change and require passport for all travel but for now it is not required. (And this may even be pushed back again, it already has 3 times).
EDIT: how sad is it that only 3 people (4 including myself) got this answer right....the amjority of people don't know what they are talking about. that is really sad. no wonder tourism is down on both sides of the border...no one knows they can cross the border./ lol |

Not if you are Canadian.
If you are an American you will not need one to come to Canada, but you will need on to go back home.
If you are flying you will need one regardless what direction you are traveling. |

Actually, you only need one to get back in to the US, not leave. Canada's crazy like that. It's almost like they want people to visit. |

No. You can go to Mexico and Canada with your license if you are driving. If you are flying you will need a passport. |

Yes, that's why you just go to the one on the the New York side. It's the exact same one, just different territories. However you can go on the tour bus on new York's side and go into canada without one. You just can't get off the bus, except for a gift shop. |
