If your not Canadian then you need a passport to travel between the US and Canada.Due to the back log of US passport application you can apply for a passport, use your receipt and along with a government issue id card to travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean from the united states all other countries will require a passport. You should check to see if you are eligible to obtain a passport as you have stated that you are a permanent resident and not a citizen. I believe you must be a citizen to obtain a passport.

Good Luck

To and from Canada, your permanent resident card is enough. If your flying outside Canada, yes you need a passport.

the resident card should be enough but it is a good idea to have a passport from your home country as well.

See the website below for the official information on what you will need to enter Canada.

from what I'm told is everyone needs a passport. You might want to call a state office and ask if you permanant resident card is enough.

As of June 8th, 2007 all US citizens require a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico, so as a permanent resident, I would think that you would need a passport too. For more information, try this website.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

It's rather long, and has huge amounts of information, but its official!

"Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence."

You might need a passport to get back into the US. Check the websites posted by thedivineoomba above.

They just recently changed the law to make it so that you have to have a passport.
