Be more specific....what is your nationality? Are you a Canadian? if you are then you don't need a visa if not then I think you should contact the "appropriate embassy" or "consulate" to determine whether or not you will need a visa well in advance of your trip

Charlie
Your nationality is the missing piece of info here. If you ar from a visa waiver nation...then no worries. if you are from a country that ordinarily needs a visa to visit the U.S., then you will be required to go thru a special customs inspection and stay in the INTERNATIONAL lounge until your connecting flight leaves. Transit visas are for people who plan to leave the airport.

Um...you would never need a "U.S." visa to visit Canada. You might need a Canadian visa, depending on your nationality.

If you're American, then no, you don't need a visa. However, if you're a citizen of one of these countries: http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLIsh/visit/visas.asp ...then you will need to apply for a visa before coming to Canada.

If you're not American, but plan to return to the U.S. after your visit to Canada, make sure you have the appropriate travel documents to re-enter the U.S. (You said you were flying, so that means you need a passport. But you'd need a passport to enter Canada, anyway, in that case.) Even if you are American and travelling by land, after June 2009, you will need a passport to go back to the U.S.

The link has a list of exceptions. Read it. For instance, if you're not American, but have a valid U.S. Green Card, you do not need a visa to enter Canada.

If you're coming from abroad, and travelling through the U.S. to get to Canada, you'll have to check the U.S. immigration information or ask your question in the U.S. section of Yahoo! Answers.

It used to be the case that someone flying from, say, Europe to Canada via the U.S. did not legally enter the U.S. if they stayed in the airport.

However, today, the U.S. will deem any person whose plane lands as being within their territory. So, if you have a small warrant against you in the U.S. and you've spent 10 years in Europe, and your flight to Toronto gets diverted to Buffalo, you'd have entered the U.S. (well, if you step off the plane.)

So, yes, if you have a nationality that requires that you obtain a U.S. Visa to enter the U.S., you'll need to obtain a U.S. Visa to have a scheduled U.S. layover.

Not if you are Canadian or a US citizen. Passport will do.

No, as long as you stay in the airport you're considered to be in international territory.
