YES-- you do! They just changed it. You now need one, but I don't know if they changed it last December or this December. Call the state department to find out. You may still be able to get by with just your birth certificate and license. But you will want one anyway because customs is a pain without it. You also absolutely need your original birth certificate (with a raised seal and everything) and a current license. Get the passport to prevent your birth certificate being lost or stolen.

Yeah, I think so. My band class went on a trip to canada, and they took a bus and everyone still needed a passport, even though they were on a bus. Most likely, you will.

I just returned from Ontario. We crossed at the Peace Bridge Buffalo/Ft. Erie. A passport is not required for American citizens, but, it will be in Jan. 2007.

They will ask for a photo ID and you need to have either a voter's registration card or birth certificate as back-up. We usually get asked for the birth certificates on the way back into the US not on the way into Canada.

Yes you do. I pass through to Alaska often and they always ask for a passport.

Janie

yes u now need a passport to go to canada or mexico

Dave O
Not if your from the U.S. then a drivers license will work.

LeRoi
nope.. but u need a car to drive with. lol

As of now, you don't necessarily need a passport(though it is wise to have one). However, I know if you are an American citizen you need to bring a picture ID and a birth certificate. It's more of a hassle. As of December 31,2007 you WILL need to have a passport whether you are traveling via sea, land or air to/through Canada.

Can't answer on the Mexico part of this question. For Canada, technically you don't need one. But you do need some type of official indentifying documents with your picture on them.

It is getting back into the US that is now a problem. They are requiring all kinds of documentation to prove you are a US citizen. The Canadian customs officials are easy to deal with. The US customs officials are much more difficult. Don't joke around with the US officials. Answer their questions honestly and it will go much smoother for you.

Since US is now requiring passports to get into this country, Canada is soon going to require them for you to get into their country if you are coming from the US. (When we banned Canadian Beef products, they then banned US beef products).

Easier to just have a passport. (Or vote the Republicans out of office as this is all their doing!) Plus, once you have one, you might decide to travel to other countries.

Not if you are American citizens

Shhhh -- the name of the country is Canada, not Cananda. But don't tell everyone, or they will try to find out where it is too, and then we'll have a stampede up here.
Do you need a passport? Not if you are an American citizen and have something that will prove it -- such as a birth certificate. Driver's licence isn't sufficient.

Starting December 1, 2006 you will.

Starting in October you will, since they changed the laws for the terrorist crap.

A friend of mine who went to Canada a couple years ago said she did. She's a US citizen. I was surprised because I didn't think your did.

miketorse
