No, not yet. You will need a passport if you are flying into Canada after Jan 23, 2007. After Jan 1, 2008 you will need a passport regardless of how you enter Canada. Until then you need a birth certificate. |

Effective January 23rd you will.
see below:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable. |

Yes, to he new law took affect yesterday. From now on everyone must have a passport to travel any place outside the US. There is some talk about a smaller id card for those who travel to work or school each day in nearby countries |

If flying by air after January 23, 2007 you will need a passport. After Jan 1st, 2008 you will either need a passport or a passcard.
I think the United States, Canada and Mexico want to provided a cheaper method of traveling to and from each country than requinging everyone to get a passport. There are boader cities where people do bussiness. Those cities do not want to lose money from either counrty. This is why they are working on a special passcard for land and sea travel. They figured if you can afford air travel or a crusie ship you can afford a passport. |

THere is a new bunch of new rules coming up this month, but up to now, American citizens could get in and out with a government issued picture ID, I used my driver's license numerous times, I am a regular cross border traveller and have enjoyed the trips, never any real problems. Now this will change this month as the USA is imposing stricter control for homeland security. |

I think it depends on how long you are staying. I was in michigan and went on a bridge over a lake to Canada, we did not have a passport, however, to cross over you had to stop at some toll thingy, and I can't remember what it was for, I think they just charged you a little bit of money or something |

I don't think you need one right now but it will soon be manditory. As it isn't right now it still makes passing much, much easier. |

No, the WHTI only applies to enter/re-enter the USA; not Canada. |

I've heard that a new law or something is supposed to be passed soon that requires all travelers going to Canada to have a passport. Currently, though, all you need is a birth certificate and a form of photo ID. However, I'd highly recommend getting a passport. When I went to Canada, I didn't have one and it must've taken at least 20 minutes just to get across the border. Other people with passports were passing through a lot faster. Hope this helps. |
