Right now, seeing that you are driving into Canada, all you need is a picture ID such as a valid drivers license. Passports to drive across the border come into effect as of January 2008. If you were to fly into Canada now you would need a passsport.

Until January 2008 you can still drive across the border without a passport. However, you will need a picture I.D. like your driver's license AND you will need an original of your birth certificate.

Currently all that is need to cross the border into Canada by car is your driver's license and birth certificate. Beginning on January 1, 2008 people traveling by car will be required to carry a passport.
Also, contact your car insurance agent to tell them that you'll be driving in Canada. They will give you a Canadian Non-Resident insurance card. This will prevent your car from being impounded if you should get into an accident.
