You need a valid passport if you travel by plane otherwise like the other answerers have already said, you only need your birth certificate and a photo ID when traveling by car

Matt
I would obtain a passport regardless in these uncertain times! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. By the way I hope that your visit to the USA is enjoyable and welcome to our country! :-) I completely enjoyed yours when I visited a number of times!

If you are a citizen of the US, Canada, or Mexico traveling by land or sea INTO THE US:
- Before 31 January 2008, you need proof of citizenship (which may be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (which may be passport, US or Canada driver's license, or military ID).
- From 01 February 2008 to 31 May 2008, you *may* be required to have a passport.
- After 01 June 2008 you *will* require a passport.

However - to ENTER CANADA:
- After 01 January 2008 you *may* be required to have a passport
- After 31 January 2008 you *will* be required to have a passport.

If you are NOT a citizen of Canada, US, or Mexico and are traveling into any of the three countries (regardless whether by land, sea, or air) - you REQUIRE a passport.

Passports are not needed for LAND travel between the U.S. and Canada...the law will go into effect sometime "later" and at least a 2 month warning wil be given. See website below and read top half of the page carefully for current info.

I believe they have pushed the passport's to 2009. We travelled a few months ago from Canada to the US for the day and I was fine with my birth certificate and photo ID (I don't drive so all I have is a liquor commission card with my pic on it)
