You only need a passport when flying into the US. Driver's license should be fine.
"Canadians can continue to use such documents as their birth certificates and drivers’ licences to cross the Canada-U.S. border by land and sea until the WHTI is fully implemented."
Something that might interest you:
a) Automobile and Automobile Insurance
If you are entering the United States by personal automobile, you should check with your insurance agent to verify that your existing coverage is valid or sufficient for the U.S. areas you will be visiting and for the duration of your visit. If you are going to remain in a specific location in the United States for a considerable period of time, you should verify with the local authorities that your vehicle registration and driver's licence will remain valid. Many states have mandatory automobile insurance requirements, and many require motorists to carry appropriate proof of insurance. Each state’s motor vehicles department can give you more specific information. The American Automobile Association (AAA) and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) can provide detailed information to their members. |

You will need a drivers licence and your birth certificate. The land border is not requiring passports until January 2008. |

Right now you do not need a passport to drive between the US and Canada. That will most likely change on January 1, 2008.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, by the US Government, will, unless the plans that are in place now change, will require everyone, including US citizens, to use passports when travelling between the US and Canada starting January 1, 2008.
As of January 23, 2007, we now need passports (or Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551) to fly between Canada and the US. |

The current law states you just need a Birth Certificate, but the law is changing. Currently, June 1, 2008 is the target date for requiring passports for Air, Land, and Sea travel, but this date has been pushed back a couple of times, so It's not set in stone yet. However, if you simply plan for needing one after that date, you'll be set even if you don't. |

I don't think you need passports yet, although it does make it easier to cross the border. If you don't have a passport, you should have two forms of identification, just to make things easier. It's best to have your birth certificate and a photo ID (like a driver's license). You might be able to get by with just a driver's license, but don't be suprised if they give you a lot of trouble and maybe even search your vehicle. |

Yes, you'll need either a passport or a visa. For information on how to get a visa, go to: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/temp_1305.html |

You need a passport since Jan.'07. That's why this year has been particularily hard to get a passport - 2 to 3 month waiting periods. I would go to a passport office and pay a little extra to have the passport fast tracked.
You can also go to your local MP office if you've already filed an application. They can get it for you quickly, without an extra cost. |
