Do you need a passport to drive from the US to Canada and back?

I have been to canada before and didn't need a passport, but it's been a few years and I am wondering if they have changed anything.

No, a new law require US citizens to carry passports upon their travel to Canada and Mexico after January 1, 2008 only

You just need some ID. Like your drivers liscence. If you are a non-American or non-Canadian resident then you need a passport, otherwise you'll be fine.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

If you are just visiting like a tourist going to see the falls, I don't think so. Things are probably more strict since 9 11.

Enigma
officially yes, however prepare for things to change. The american government has issued a decree and Canada is accepting that would force travellers to have an I.D card in order to cross the border.

YES, Here in Alaska we dock the ferry in Canada. The border patrol is there on the U.S side to check Passports, and the same on the Canadian side but With the Mounties. If you do not have a passport you better have the following 3 forms of I.D. State I.D. or Driver License, Birth certificate and a Social Security card. If you don't have any of these your going to jail either in the USA or Canda!!!

Not a passport, only an ID

heck no, all the time my friends drive over the border because the bar there doesn't check ID's, they do it like every weekend.

I was just up there two weeks ago and used my passport just to be safe. I don't think it is required yet, but it will be in the next year or so. If you have on, use it.
