No, a passport is not required yet. The following link is for the regulations soon to be into effect. But this requirement is probably going to be delayed 15 months so its not gonna be into effect till June 2009. Traveling to Canada you should have your birth certificate and drivers ID with you at all times. You will need to prove who you are if asked .. although thats never happened to me yet.

Yeah you should always carry your passport with you when going to another country. Even if Canada is laid back to Americans, it is still a good idea in case something happens. IDs are always important.

All u need is a picture ID such as drivers liences and a birth certifate...and if u have any questions u should ask ur travel agent they can help u out more!

If you are an american citizen, your driver's license is enough. I brought my birth certificate as back up although it wasn't asked for. If you have a green card, you need to go to your country's embassy and get the passport.

Although it's not manditory yet, it is a good idea to carry your passport as a secondary piece of photo id.
