If you're a U.S. citizen and coming to Canada by land, no you don't. At the moment a U.S. passport is not needed to enter Canada - it's having a passport to return to the U.S. - via air - that is required.

When driving across the border, no passport is needed until Jan 2008 or later (date not yet set).

To enter Canada, you need official photo I.D. (Drivers License). Occasionally you may be asked for proof of citizenship (i.e. birth certificate).

To re-enter the U.S. you will need Photo I.D. AND proof of Citizenship.

Passports are currently needed for all air travel, and it is recommended that you get a passport within the next year, so that you have one.

No. I don't believe you do.

However, coming back, be sure you do have something to show.

No, but you will need a passport if you want to get back into the U.S.

Not if you're an American citizen. My mother visited some Canadian cousins about a year and a half ago, and she didn't need anything.

Always Right
