If you are a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico:
- - and are traveling by air, you need a passport after 01 January 2007 to enter the US by air (and therefore any of the others, if it's a round-trip originating in the US)
- - and are traveling by land or sea before 31 December 2007, you need proof of citizenship (which can be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND a valid photo ID (which can be passport, US or Canada driver's license, or military ID). Again this is to enter the US ... so the neighboring countries are being reciprocal and requiring the same documentation
- - after 01 January 2008, you must have a valid passport regardless of how you plan to travel (and regardless of which country you're entering)

If you are NOT a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico, you must have a vlaid passport ... and in some cases a visa as well

The customs and immigration folks on BOTH sides of the border have the right to refuse entry to anyone they deem has either insufficient or incorrect identification - regardless of which direction the traveler is headed and in which country they hold citizenship.

No, you do not need a passport to travel to Canada by land yet. the requirement for passports for land travel will go into effect as early as jan. 2008 and as late as june 2009. Exact date has not yet been set . See 2 websites below to confirm this.

If you are flying you need one (see the link for the exceptions due to issues with them being issued in time).

If you are driving you are OK for now. You will need one in the future so you should just get it now.

Here is the Department of State website that explains the current situation: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

I hope that helps.

Hi. No, not yet. Only by air travel. They have been going back and forth with this for years (I have a sister who has a summer home in Canada).

Anyway, I can tell you definitely NO. I traveled to Canada (through Detroit) in June. I believe it's going into effect in 2009 (for car travel). If you are flying, then YES. Have fun!
