No, at this point you don't (assuming you are a US citizen or permanent resident), a birth certificate and photo id or other document indicating your citizenship is sufficient. This may change in the near future, but not likely this summer.

No you don't as long as you are a US citizen and you don't have a criminal record you can pass the boarder no problem with a birth certifit and photo ID I am Canadian and travel to the US daily I only have a birth Cerf and a drivers license. IN 2008 it will be mandatory to have a passport

K*O
yes, you do.

it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get a passport, you have get it faster, like one week, but you have to pay like $200. I don't think that you need a passport to go to Toronto, but it probably depends on the length of time that you are staying in Canada and what country you are a citizen of. If you are American I don't think you need one if you are there for travel, and for a limited period of time.

NO US citizens do NOT need a passport to go to Canada!!!

You will, however, need:

1.
Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2.
Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

There have been SUGESTIONS that the law gets changed but NOTHING HAS BEEN CHANGED!

PROPOSED implementation timeline is as follows:

*
December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
* December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.
