If you are crossing the border in a car or by boat you do not need a passport. They did have the new regulations in place that you needed one if you were traveling by air, but due to extreme backlogs in the processing times, they have relaxed the rules and you just need proof that you applied for the passport. You can get all of the information you need in both these websites:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/
http://www.cbp.gov

You shouldn't if you're driving. I was just there, I gave them my passport but my boyfriend just gave them his driver's license. I'd be sure to not only have your license but also your birth certificate just in case they would happen to want further proof of citizenship.

Well the last time I checked the country was still CANADA and if you are travelling from the USA by land then you do not need a passport til next year summer. By air you will need one by January

All other countries you will need a passport and a visa

Not yet, unless you are flying. However you need a drivers licence or similar and your birth certificate or proof of citizenship or residency both to enter Canada and to get back into the US.
BTW, as someone else has pointed out, passports are standard in the rest of the world. North America is just catching up.

As of I know if you have valid Driving licence then it is enough to travel

Please check your spelling before you go there, you may not get back. As far as I know you don't, for I had family who crossed the border during harvest.

Not quite yet. Supposedly, you will have to starting in January but many people don't think that it will happen.

well, as US border security gets tighter, so does the Canadian side. I went a month ago and yes i needed a passport, in fact i was stopped and questions. i was just going to visit family.

oh and this was driving across.

you used to be able to get away with your birth cert and ID but not anymore. good luck waiting for yours.
Happy travels.

If you are a US citizen with gov't issued photo id and a birth certificate you will likely be okay to enter Canada, now and in the future. The problem will be when you return to the US - they're the ones that will be insisting that all travellers present a valid passport.
