As of June 1, 2009 all travelers leaving the US will require a passport. This includes air, sea and land travel

Passport for US citizens is taking approx 4 weeks for processing and then delivery time. Expedited service is 2-3 weeks delivered.

**All children regardless of age, including newborns and infants, must have their own passport** courtesy of the US Passport website

You didn't say you were driving to Canada.

If you're flying, you have needed a passport for years now.

If driving, you won't need a passport until June 1st. Without a passport prior to June 1st, you will need to show a government-issued photo i.d. (such as a driver's licence) plus proof of U.S. citizenship.

You'd have to check with your local passport office for processing times. In Canada, processing times are available online, so it likely is for the U.S., too.

Yes you will need a passport to go into Canada after May 31st. Children need one as well. It is now taking up to 6 weeks to get a passport unless you expedite it by paying the extra charge.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers will no longer accept oral declarations of U.S. or Canadian citizenship from those traveling by land or sea. U.S. and Canadian travelers will be required to present:

- A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license and
- A birth certificate or other proof of citizenship;
- Or - for youth 18 and under - a birth certificate alone

U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Card

If the childeren are traveling with 1 parents, you MAY need a letter from the other parents stating you have permission to travel with the childeren out of state. making the dates and place of travel clear.

As for how long it takes for the passport - i am sorry i do not know.

Yes, you need passports. Yes, children under 18 either need their own passports or need to be included on their parents' passports. How long does it usually take to get them? That's a question you have to ask the US Customs and Immigration people, because they are the ones who issue US passports.

Finally get to say and unqualified "YES"!! As of June 1st anyone (adults, children babies) leaving the US with the intent to return, whether by land or by sea will need a passport to re-enter the US.

Yes, you will need a passport to go to any other country. It takes about 4 - 6 weeks, unless you pay more money for expediting. You will have to check with the passport people as to the age cut-off. Good Luck. I hear Canada is a very nice place.
