I travel to Canada all the time. If you are flying, bring a passport, it will make things a lot easier. If you are driving, bring a drivers license with a picture on it. A birth certificate is recommended, but I have never been asked to present one.

right now all you need is some sort of identification(such as a drivers license)..In a year or so, you will need a passport to go to Canada, or Mexico

Didn't you hear the latest??? Canada got smart and decided it was detrimental to Canadians to let any Americans into Canada. Just joking. I live in a border city and travel frequently between the two countries and NO you do not need a passport. Usually a birth certificate and a piece of photo ID does the trick. Enjoy Niagara Falls it is definitely in a natural wonder of the world.

i grew up near buffalo and never needed a passport but I have lived in the South for 22 years I guess some things might have changed. So in answer to your question i don't know LOL

Well, last time I went, pre 9.11, you only needed a passport to re-enter the US.
Now, I would guess you need one to get into Canada and to get back into the US

Not yet. You will need picture ID and proof of citizenship. I usually just show my birth certificate and driver licence when going to the US

No, but you will need a birth certificate or something proving you are a U.S. citizen. You will also need a valid driver's license.

The passport thing hasn't gone into effect yet. Right now if you are a US citizen, it isn't required. Here is the official info:

"Visas and Travel Documents

New Requirements for Travelers Between the United States and the Western Hemisphere: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that, by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. This is a change from prior travel requirements. The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors. The U.S. passport is the document of choice because of the incorporated advanced security features.

Travelers to and from Canada will be required to have a U.S. passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. For land border crossings to Canada, other documents that we anticipate will be acceptable are NEXUS and FAST program cards. No other document is currently available that will be an acceptable substitute for a U.S. passport, NEXUS or FAST card. However, we are using new technologies to create other acceptable travel documents. We will make public additional travel document options as they become available.

The travel initiative requirements will be rolled out in phases. The proposed implementation timeline is as follows:

December 31, 2006 â€“ Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 â€“ Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driverâ€™s license, voterâ€™s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
Photo identification, such as a current, valid driverâ€™s license.
All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a â€œGreen Card.â€

If you are a dual U.S./Canadian citizen you should always present yourself as a Canadian citizen when entering Canada. However, U.S. citizens should use their U.S. passports when entering or leaving the United States.

Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry. "

I just got this info from Travelocity.com, so I think it is the most accurate info:

Tourist: No visa is required for a stay up to 90 Days, but a passport or proof of U.S. Citizenship (original or certified copy of government issued birth certificate OR original or certified copy of naturalization certificate) along with a valid state issued photo ID are required. Beginning December 31, 2006 a passport will be required.
