Do you need a passport to go through Canada, we are moving to Alaska in about a year, we want to be prepared?
Additional Details My husband is military and we have gotten stationed at Fort Wainwright, by Fairbanks for at least 3 years. But I am happy, I love the cold and the snow and can't wait to go.
at this minute you don't need a passport, I heard its 2009. You had better check with customs instead of Yahoo. If we are wrong, you could get in alot of trouble.
Also I just moved to the Yukon from Ontario. Don't listen to the people who say its a bad idea. Its great. Just be prepared for the darkness of winter and the midnight sun in the summer, it really plays with your head. Good luck!!

Congrats! You will be ok coming into Canada - it's going back to Alaskan soil where you will need a passport but only if you are returning by air and after Jan. 8/07. As for actual travel throughout Canada - you can travel from province to province without needing a thing.
You're going to likely be travelling to the Yukon, B.C. or Alberta as they are you're closest short hauls I would concern myself with returning to the US through customs rather than exiting. If travelling by car photo ID and birth certificate are fine until mid 2009.
If in doubt ask a travel agent at the nearest mall.

hmmmm....why are you moving to Alaska?
It's really cold.
Are you moving because you like it or because you have family there? or maybe someone in your family found a job?

if you have a yahoo pasport then you should be fine. just tell imigration that you are entering electronically and traveling via e mail through canada. dont give them your password though.
Oh it would help if you had your birth certificate with you.
