ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada may be required to present proof of citizenship and identity. U.S. citizens are encouraged to show a U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or U.S. passport.
U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid U.S. passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens to visit Canada of up to 180 days. Anyone seeking to enter Canada for any purpose besides a visit, (e.g. to work, study or immigrate) should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest consulate prior to travel. Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest Canadian consulate well in advance of any planned travel for further processing, which may take some time.
For further information on entry requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of Canada at 501 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20001, tel. (202) 682-1740, or the Canadian consulates in Buffalo, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York or Seattle. The Canadian Embassy’s website is: http://www.canadianembassy.org/. |

They have not yet changed the rules about that. Driver's lisence or birth certificate is enough for now. It will be a year or more before that changes. However, it's alway good to have a valid passport handy, just in case you want to go somewhere at a whim. Who knows, maybe you win radio contest for a trip somewhere or you win the lottery and want to get away from the media hype. You never know. |

If you're an American citizen you can use a birth certificate with a government issued picture id |

As of this year i believe you need a passport to go to canada, it sucks, cheap beer is much more difficult to obtain for those who live close to the border |

Drivers license or Birth certificate used to be good, unless they have changed things, either way you won't need a goose. ;) |

You do not need a passport for now. You can also go to Mexico without a passport however that is in the process of change and should take effect in 2008 and then you will need a passport. |

Thank you, everyone who answered this. I'm making a trip soon to Vancouver, BC & I was scrambling for what I needed. The passport woulda cost me nearly $200 for expedited service. The Birth Certificate: all I hafta do is walk 1.5 block, pony up $12 & I should have it in less than a week...shweet! |

not YET...
the border communities both sides are trying to get congress to reconsider, but for everyone in 2008 (including americans), getting INTO the US is supposed to REQUIRE A PASSPORT
meantime, same deal for coming to canada as it is for us to go to the US... TWO pieces of government issued id is best, with at least one of them being a photo ID...
if you have a social security card and a birth certificate and a photo id student card, for example, that will work.. for now...
call your congressman(woman) and tell them that passports at the US Canada border is a poor idea, and that they should think of something CHEAPER |

At present, a birth certificate is good enough. George Bush keeps talking about making passports mandatory for everyone entering the US, but he hasn't done it yet, so as long as you can prove you are a US citizen, you can get back into the States. |

I always thought you needed a birth certificate but my mom told me a driver's license was all you needed. Unless you are underage or don't have a license, and then you need a birth certificate.
Hope this helps.
PS - If you have a passport, it never hurts to take it with you! The way things are, that rule could change any time!!! |
