you need a passport to return to the united states if you're traveling by air. if you drive or take a boat or ferry, you will not need a passport until 2008.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

If you are flying, yes.

If you are driving - technically no (any form of picture ID, such as a driver's license, is supposed to be acceptable). However, realistically, yes, it would be a good idea - since 9/11 security has been much tighter.

Either way, you do not need a visa if you are an American citizen - Americans are automatically granted 90 days in Canada without one; if you plan on staying longer, you should ask for a student, work or permanent resident visa. Visitors from other countries should probably phone the embassy nearest them and ask.

By the way, sometimes it is harder to return to the United States than it is to enter Canada! Be warned.

You may not need a passport to get into Canada, but you need a passport to get back into the US. New travel rules went into effect this year.

From what i know the answer is no, now a days u do need a passport to go to canada from the us but it is bound to change sometime. For now here is some information:

The following pieces of identification will serve as satisfactory proof of American citizenship to enter Canada.

Please note, however, that photocopies of ID are not acceptable, only originals:
US passport

OR

Birth certificate,

OR

Certificate of citizenship or naturalization,

AND

Photo ID, such as current driver's license
All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.
