Do you need a passport to go to Canada if you're a U.S. citizen?

I know they're going to require it eventually....I just didn't know if it went into effect yet.

Currently? No. (But it can help, as they do pester you at times. If you don't have a passport, a voter registration card can help.)

But it is supposed to change by Jan 1, 2007 (that's still up to debate)

no, but you need to show some sort of i.d
but i believe the law is changing soon

Hi matt,,, not until Jan 1 of next year,,,,,, ok

good luck

xboxgirl
officially: NO

BUT they are sticky about it sometimes. Sometimes they will let you go across with just a Birth Certificate, sometimes they say you need a passport. Sometimes they let you through with a warning "Go get a passport for next time".

For fly in stays into Canada the passport rule is effective starting Jan 8th 2007. For drive in stays to Canada it starts Dec. 26th 2007. That date of course may change.

Avril Lavigne RULES

I am not certain about going to Canada but it might be more important to get back into the US.

Ask about both for getting into Canada and back in to the good old USA!

No, not yet. Last I heard, you'd need one to get back into the States traveling by plane starting in January, but by car it wouldn't start until 2009. You DO need ID and proof of citizenship, though.

Not until January.

No not yet George Bush is attempting to get some legislation passed that will require a passport I believe in 2009, hope this helps

Not yet, but it's coming soon. An item in the paper this morning said sometime in 2007 -- but even more interesting, US citizens will have to have a citizen identity card, which will contain a computer chip, to get back into the country if they leave the States. Now that's going to be an interesting scenario!

Mockinbi has it right, but it still is a good idea to take one. It's usually American Customs and Immigration, not the Canadian, who will most hassle and question you (although the Canadians can be almost as bad at some of the major highway crossing points).
