Do you need a passport to go to canada?

i've heard different things from different people.
i heard that it doesnt go into effect until 2009, but i heard it started last year from another person.

im going in july and i need to know.

&what is the drinking age in montreal? 18?
Additional Details
i also heard that if you do need a passport, since they take so long to get, if you bring the paper saying you applied for one, that works too.

Everyone said yes you need a passport...but that is only PART of the answer you need. You need a passport if you are FLYING to and from Canada. You do not yet need a passport to travel there by LAND. That requirement has not been implemented and has no set date. To travel by LAND, you need a gov't issued photo I.D. and a proof of ctizenship...which can be a passport OR a certified birth certificate.

The regulations regarding passports, assuming you are from the US, were set on the US side by the Department of Homeland Security. The requirements vary depending on your method of travel. At present they are:

By Air: A Valid Passport

By Land: A valid Passport OR a government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver's License, Citizenship Card) and an official birth certificate.

By Sea: Same as for land.

the Department of Homeland Security had proposed to make passports a requirement for all travel into and out of the US effective January 31, 2008. This was postponed to July, 2008 and further postponed by Congress until 2009. The actual date it will be implemented has not been set however it is likely to be between March to July of that year. During the interim other forms of ID such as a passport card and an enhanced drivers license are being developed that may eliminate the need for a passport.

Presently the legal drinking age in Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta is 18, it is 19 in the rest of the country. I have posted the link below however it may be out of date as Nunavet, the newest territory is not on the list. However other sources have also given the same information as shown in the other link for Contiki Holidays.

I go to canada like every week cause they have some awesome stuff there and I live in a Michigan so it's like RIGHT THERE. all you need it your birth certificate. If you have a passport that works but your birth certificate works totally fine to.
If you can't find your birth certificate then you can get a passport card. That only works for Canada, though but it's way cheaper than a regular passport...
The passport/birth certificate thing went into effect last year, by the way.
Oh and the legal drinking age is 18 in Montreal. Other parts of canada have the drinking age as 19, though.

have fun in canada :)

yes you do .... My cousin and her boyfriend went up there

Ignore the person who gave you an incorrect info regarding the passport requirement. It has not started yet. It'll prolly go into effect by this time next year. You are not required to have a passport if you're traveling by a car (assuming you're a US citizen)but you need a government issued photo ID like a driver's license and your birth certificate. You need a valid passport if you're traveling by a plane. And the drinking age is 18 in Montreal Quebec.

Ava Jade
I think you need a passport card rather than a book.

Tsunami
my cousin went and yes you need one.
