Do you need a passport to re-enter the United States from Canada?
You don't need a passport when traveling by car(assuming you're a Canadian citizen) you only need a driver's license and birth certificate.
You need a valid passport if you're traveling by plane regardless of your nationality.
Charlie
The reason some say yes and some say no is...you need a passport if you are FLYING to and from Canada and the U.S. You do not need a passport yet for LAND travel. That requirement has not yet been implemented and has no set date. See site below and read top half of page carefully. For land travel you need a photo I.D. and proof of citizenship...a passport OR birth certificate.

The requirements for re-entering the US vary depending on the method of travel you are using. They are as follows:
Air - A valid US Passport is required to travel by air to the US.
Land - A valid government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver's Licence) and an official birth certificate are required. If you were not born in the US but are a citizen or landed immigrant then your Citizenship Card or Green Card will also be required.
Sea - A valid government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver's Licence) and an official birth certificate are required. If you were not born in the US but are a citizen or landed immigrant then your Citizenship Card or Green Card will also be required.
There was a proposal to require passports for all travel to the US as of January, 2008. This was postponed to July, 2008 and has been further postponed to 2009 by Congress. Although a firm date has not been indicated it is likely between March to July, 2009 for this requirement to be brought into place. Other alternatives to a passport are being developed for testing and, depending on the results, may replace the need for a passport for travel in North America.
Of course if you have a passport that is the best form of ID and can speed up time spent crossing the border. It also eliminates the need for the other forms of ID (except of course your Driver's Licence if you are driving)

No. By land you must have either a passport *or* photo ID plus birth certificate. By air you must have a passport. Cheers!!

For the most part, yes. Unless you have one of the following:
1. U.S. Passport Card (Available spring 2008)
2. Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
3. State or Provincial Issued Enhanced Driver’s License (when available – this secure driver’s license will denote identity and citizenship.)
Note: Photo ID and birth certificate are no longer valid.

Acually, drivers license + birth certificate are good if travelling by car.
