Do you need a passport to travel by land to Canada?

Where are you from?

For Americans living in U.S.A.:

Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Canada are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::...

For Canadian living in Canada:

For Canadians travelling from Canada to the United States:
Since January 23, 2007, a new American law requires everyone entering the United States BY AIR to have a valid passport. Canadians can continue to use such documents as their birth certificates and drivers' licence to cross the Canada-U.S. border BY LAND AND SEA for at least another year.

If you're a US citizen...no. The new law has been suspended because of the backlog at the passport issuing center.

(actually you won't need one later either... once the law becomes implemented...you will need a passport to return to USA)

pppppffffttt
they r wrong, not til jan. 2008

If you are traveling by land or water you currently do not need a passport. If you are traveling by air you just need to prove that you have applied for a passport.

If your coming from the US. I would get a passport Just to be safe. If you are travelling within Canada of course you don't need one.

You do not need a passport to travel by land or air to come to Canada. The laws to enter Canada have not changed. It is the "entry or re-entry" to the USA which has changed because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative...which is an American based law. That means they control what comes into the USA. They do NOT control what goes into another country; that is up to wherever you are going to.

In terms of land travel. Again, to enter Canada you do not need a passport. To come back to the USA (re-entry) you will not need a passport until as early as January 2008 and as late as June 2009.

Keep watching the news though...there are suggested changes that are being proposed that "may" make drivers licences usable.

Until Jan. 2008, you just need a driver's license with photo and another piece of identification (birth certificate etc.) After Jan. you will need a passport to return to the US.

TakerRjb
now you do, but 2 years before you didn't need one. the reason for this is reduction in 'terrorism" which makes no sense.
