Yes, you need a passport to go to another country. You used to be able to go to Mexico without one though. Now you have to have one to go to any other country. |

why don't you people get your facts right before misleading people
if your flying to canada you need a passport

No you don't. Not until this June.
I live in Canada right on the American border. The U.S. is literally a fifteen minute drive from my house.
Edit: Not if you're driving but you do if you're flying. However your country requires you to have one to re-enter the U.S.

Wow!!! what a lot of wrong answers! If you are travelling by car you do not need a passport to enter Canada (though you will by June 2009). You need a government issued photo ID, like your license, and your birth certificate (indicating that you were born in the states, otherwise a passport is needed). And those are the documents you will need to re-enter the states. For the second website, scroll down to the bottom to see the regulations in effect as of now. |

Yes you do.
Visitors from any country other than the U.S. need a passport to enter Canada. On the other hand, because of a friendly border crossing agreement between Canada and the United States, Canada Border Services does not require U.S. citizens to present a passport to enter Canada. This friendly border crossing agreement used to be mutual; however, now the WHTI requires that U.S. citizens have a passport to return home. In this way, passport requirements for Canada and U.S. borders are different on paper, but, are in practice, the same. Does it make sense to allow someone into the country who does not have the proper documentation to return home? |

I cannot believe the number of "idiots' who are still WRONG about the passport requirements for entry into Canada and re-entry into the United States.
As of TODAY, if you are travelling by land or by sea, you DO NOT need a passport to enter Canada or to re-enter the United States. A government issue photo ID as well as proof of citizenship is ALL THAT IS REQUIRED. If you are travelling by air then yes you will need a passport to get back into the United States.
Effective June 1, 2009 everybody will need a passport in order to get into or out of Canada and the USA.
For pete sake people, if you don't know the right answer then BUTT OUT!!!!!! |
