It does matter if you are travelling by land. By land you will not need a passport if you are a US citizen. You will need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's licence and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate. The deadline for needing a passport has been extended until at least the summer of 2009.

By air you would need a passport.

Leah
Since you are driving (from Michigan I assume), you just need to have a driver's license and a CERTIFIED copy of your Birth Certificate (make sure its certified!).

You can read more about the rules at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

horsinround2do
not yet. You need photo ID and your birth certificate. Later this year you will need a passport.

Jeff H
If travelling by car you are required to have a government issued ID such as a drivers license and your birth certificate. If you were not born in the US then you should also bring your citizenship card. You do not require a passport yet and although this requirement was to have been in place as of July of this year it has been postponed tentatively until summer 2009. This is, of course, subject to change but the requirement to have a passport will not be in effect for the immediate future. That being said a passport is the easiest form of ID to use and if you plan on travelling by air outside of the US you will need one. I travel the other way (Canada to the US) and use my passport which tends to speed up (slightly) getting across the border.

No you do not need a passport to cross by land. Just your birth certificate and a drivers licence

"As of Dec 21, 2007, passport requirements have been once again delayed meaning that US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009."

Leah gave you the correct answer and the texas guy is all wet. It does not matter if you are American, Canadian, or Mexican...the WHTI rules apply equally to all... see site below and read top half or page carefully for the current info...updated 1st week of Jan. I believe "Texas" is quoting an outdated source...the date has been moved back, but there are still sources on-line that give the old info. This is why you need to use the U.S.State Dep't website...it is always kept updated and gives the correct, current info.

Take what others give you (the www.travel.state.gov website) with a grain of salt ... this information is for travel INTO THE US, not into Canada.

If you are a US, Canadian, or Mexican citizen and are traveling by land or sea INTO CANADA after 01 January 2008:
- you *may* be required to provide a passport as proof of citizenship/identity. You *will* have to provide some proof of citizenship (which may be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND a photo ID (which may be passport, US or Canada driver's license, or military ID).

If you are a US, Canadian, or Mexican citizen and are traveling by land or sea INTO CANADA after 31 January 2008:
- you *will* be required to provide a passport as proof of citizenship/identity.

If traveling by air, or are not a citizen of the US, Canada, or Mexico ... an individual WILL require a passport to cross into Canada. The individual may also be required to have a visa, depending on your actual nationality. To make the return to the US easier, an individual should also bring their proof of permanent residency.

AIR TRAVEL

Implemented on January 23, 2007, ALL PERSONS traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

LATER
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.

U.S. PASSPORT AND OTHER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air, land or sea between the U.S. and the aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries.
The Passport Card: U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for this new, limited-use, wallet-size passport card beginning February 1, 2008. We expect cards will be available and mailed to applicants in spring 2008. When available it will only be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda.
Other Accepted Travel Documents: SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST and the U.S. Coast Guard Mariner Document. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty traveling on orders are exempt from the passport requirement. DHS has more information on these travel documents. This information may be seen at www.dhs.gov.
