You don't need a passport if you are a US citizen or a Canadian citizen. You will need a birth certificate as proof of citizenship if you don't have a passport, plus a photo ID. If you are a Permanent Resident of the US you should bring your green card.

The links I've included should give you all the information you need. I hope this helps.

We had our birth certificates and our current driver's licenses. That was sufficient, there was no comment made that we should have had passports. If you have them you can bring them, that is what they are for; entering another country.
whatever you do, don't cross the border patrol, they don't like to joke or even crack a smile.

I think you can use a birth certificate as well...

If you are American or Canadian traveling between the two countries you only need two valid pieces of ID, like a drivers licence and a birth certificate.

You should be fine with your drivers license, but technically you are supposed to have either a passport or a birth certificate. It depends on how friendly (or un friendly) the border patrol is?

Lady D
not necessarily but hold it jus in case or a birth cert or any idenitfication

Beginning in 2007 you will need a passport for Canada and Mexico where now you can get by with just DL and Birth Cert. Check us.state.gov for additional info
