Do you need chains or 4x4 driving to Whistler from Vancouver?

I'll be coming into Seattle on Jan 17 and will be renting a car to get to Whistler. Some people say I don't need chains (I drive tahoe all the time, so I know how to drive in the snow), while others say its needed. Anybody have a real answer?

no chains are needed ,for sure
my brother lives there.
if it snows ,just slow down, that highway is good

You do not need chains to get to Whistler unless a real storm comes in. If you want current road information with a web cam view of the hwy go to http://www.whistlervillageinn.com and click on the road conditions link.
I just checked it and there is snow but the roads look clear.
When you are in the mountains the weather can change rapidly but they are really on top of this highway with Whistler being so popular.

Only if your going avoid the roads and go straight over the mountains.

I agree with bargod

Absolutely not. Unless it's snowing REALLY hard, the road is rarely covered.

I've been to Whistler many times also in the winter and snowing season.
Usually don't need to prepare chains but if you worry about some roads just bring it in case of case.
Have a nice trip.

I don't know about up north, there, but where I live, the only vehicles that need chains in the mountains are the big rigs. I bought a set of chains when I first moved (to the mountains in Colorado) at the insistance of my mother, and I have only used them once in 23 years. That was when I was driving my parents to the airport the first time they came to visit. And even then, we didn't put them on until we were past the storm. I felt a little silly.
