You will need ID, not necessarily a passport, but you will need something that is Government Issued that has your photograph on it.

I've been told that you do need your passport to get into Canada. I would bring ID, birth certificate and passport (just in case.)

Where are you coming from? If you are coming into Canada from Vermont, USA for a day trip, probably not.
You may need your passport to get back into your own country, though.
