Do you think Quebec should be its own country?

I've read the other answers given, and very few were at all rational, most just plain offensive. *sigh* There is so little understanding. I'll give my Quebecer point of view, if you don't mind.

There are many reasons why people in Quebec feel we should separate. Mostly, it has to do with the fact that we often just plainly feel different. Not just based on the language, but on our values. Many think the decisions of the federal government do not represent us. We already feel apart, so why not make it official?

This was how I saw things as a teen. I remember the 1995 referendum, and from then on decided there is no other option than separatism. But as I grew up, and began to pay more attention to politics, I realise there's much more to it than that.

First of all, the idea is utopic. Most people want to separate from Canada, but still retain pretty much everything we have now. I don't think being our own country but using Canada's money and postal services is an alternative. It would make us look a bit ridiculous, and I don't think we'd have much weight in world issues. If separating from canada only means we'll be its little lap dog, I say no thanks.

I also realize that the rest of the world seems to be trying to unite. I'm thinking of European Union. Are there countries who are as culturally different as France, Greece, Spain and Germany, only to name a few? Yet they choose to associate together for many many decisions.

Finally, we also have no certainty that having our own little government would be that much better. Look at how tangled provincial politics are right now. There will always be people unhappy with the state of things. Are different parts of Quebec going to want to separate and form another tiny little country if they feel different?

I'm thinking that yes, we may be different from the rest of Canada. But so are Newfoundlanders different from Albertans, and so a British Colombians (??) different from Ontarians. We are a big country, so are bound to be different. We just have to figure out ways to get along and stop bickering about who's better than who.

They would become bankrupt, and come crawling back. Pathetic though how so very few ppl make such a disturbance. Personaly I think its stupid, and I'm not being mean, I mean it. My grandmother is french and you know what...She thinks its retarted.

The idea of an independent Quebec is a bad idea. I am happy to have Quebec as part of Canada as it is the combination of all Canadians that makes this country what it is. Every time Canadians see a referendum for sovereignty, and the money it is wasting to hold a vote like that, it makes the rest of us a little angry. If Francophone's really do want to separate then I do think it is important to make some points clear. The remainder of the Canadian provinces would not have to give Canadian citizenship to anyone choosing to reside in the independent Nation of Quebec anymore then we would be entitled to a Quebec citizenship, nor would either country have to support dual citizenship. Quebec would have to have its own currency, or we would change ours, as it is illegal to print another countries currency.

Independence means being independent, not choosing what parts you want to keep. There are many other groups, such as the aboriginals who were here long before the English or the French, who are just as entitled or even more so to a referendum of their own. The strength of Canada comes from its combined peoples and we should be unified. Any that choose to not be part of it need to understand clearly that they will be like any other foreign country and are not entitled to the use of Canadian infrastructure, the use of Canadian currency, and are not entitled to Canadian citizenship or passports.

If the majority truly want it then yes.

What we do need to do is stop bribing them with federal money to stay.

I don't think Quebec wants to leave - they just want to threaten so they can continue to extort better and better deals from the feds. And like a bunch of chumps we keep falling for it.

Rebel
Well I live in Quebec and I speak for many when I say NoWay... Quebec and Canada would both suffer if we did. I have lived in other parts of Canada and came back home, its where I was born and grew up. I love the province just not crazy about its politics. I am always dismayed when people group all the population of Quebec into one basket..Think about it.. ???

There would be no advantage to Quebec becoming its own country. They already have special consideration in the federal structure of Canada and receive an incredible amount of subsidies that would be lost if they became independent. They were formerly discriminated against because of their language and origins, but much of that has been remedied. When the seperatist movement was hot in the 60s and there was violence, all the of the important international banking and finance groups moved the heck out of Montreal, reducing that city's importance and making it No. 2 to Toronto. If the Quebecois aren't happy with the way things are, they need to change it from within, not separate.

Given up on Giving up
No. Because at the beginning of each year, the Canadian Government replaces spent money in all provinces and equals out the amount of money each province has. It is a known fact that Quebec is usually left with the least money at the end of the year and only thanks to the government, does it receive and ends up with the same amount as other provinces. If Quebec split from Canada, the money would not be given to it at the beginning of each year. Because after all, it's not a Canadain Province anymore, why should Canadian Government give it money? Without support, Quebec would not be able to survive by itself and will go bankrupt.

I don't think so. I agree with Rebel. I have lived elsewhere in Canada and my family has come back here. First of all the cost of separation is just too much. Québec benefits from the federal government for many things, healthcare, education, etc.. without those subsidies Québecers would suffer. Canada also needs Québec. Dividing the country is bad for everyone.

No, My Canada includes Quebec. Besides, they're not that special no matter how much they want the rest of the country to think otherwise.

no...the same way that California should not be its own country or Rio Grande Do Sul in Brasil....this province/states think they are "all that" for one reason or another...OF THE 3...

only California would be successful...it has the 5th highest GNP in the world...California COULD do it..but why would we??? Californians are Americans as much as any other person...making us a country accomplishes NOTHING...

Quebec..the difference between yourselves and the rest is that you speak French a bit more than the rest...nothing else...get over yourselves and go back to work!

Gauchos...I am aware that you think RGS is worthy of its own country and rumor has it you even had a currency ready and everything...your socioeconomic status means jack to ANYBODY else in the world...and what...because your history is predominantly european, Brasil owes you something???

stop being rich whiny babies people and maybe if you HELP those in your country who are not as fortunate as yourselves...then your respective countries will benefit as a whole...and not just within the posh Bourgeoisie who look down on those of color and those in poverty! Plenty of people are NOT in your situation...go outside of your comfortable zone..even if it is a shell that is an inch or two outside your skin and help those who can't help themselves and worry about your own ability to have your state become a country when your whole country is well off enough to leave your state behind and forcing you into becoming a country...

No, I don't think Quebec should be its own country at all. I think if it's to seperate, a lot of problems would occur. Just my 2 cents in.

Quebec should shut up or do us all a favor and go to France and stay!!!!!!
