Apparently you can use an expired passport for proof of US citizenship, as long as you also have your current government issued photo id(ex drivers license)
But if you have your original(certified)birth certificate and drivers license use that, and take your passport just in case.
June 1, 2009 a passport will be required for all travel modes.
From the U.S. Department of State:
"Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada must carry both proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. If U.S. citizen travelers to Canada do not have a passport or approved alternate document such as a NEXUS card, they must show a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. Children under sixteen need only present proof of U.S. citizenship."
Edit: You may have a hard time getting back into the US though, they require your passport to be Valid. I would double check to make sure that you will be able to re-enter the US with out any problems. |

No, you need to have a valid state or country issued identification when crossing by car. |

Right now you still don't need a passport to enter Canada by road. Not until this summer some time. Just use a VALID drivers license or other VALID Govt photo ID and you will be fine.
Valid = current and not expired. |
