Hello. |
Do you think its weird when canadians say Eh? |
to tell the truth, canadians dont say eh that much. How do i know that? I am canadian!!. i dont say it much and i dont hear many ppl say it much, and also lots of ppl think it means to ask a question but its not. EX. its really nice outside today, eh
or...
He's really hot, eh
it may sound like a question but its not |

I hate when people get soo stereotypical and think we say 'eh' all the time. I say eh on occasion but just as much as americans i'm sure. Eh is kind of a way of stating a question, so i agree with you there.
I also hate when people think we say aboot instead of about, because I've never heard anyone say that! |

I'm Canadian too. Let me translate it into American for you.
its really nice outside today, huh!
or...
He's really hot, Huh!
Eh is used in some regions more, some situations more, and in less educated/sophisticated backgrounds more. |

I dont say it much and I am Canadian. My brother went away to Minot ND and he came back saying "you know how it is, HUH", "huh" etc. That drove me crazy.
And...I'd much rather say "a-boot" for about than call the top of my house (roof) something a dog says "ruf-ruf" |

I barely ever say eh? Eh? is more of an active rhetorical question, if there is such a thing...ex. What the big idea, eh?
Or it could be just the person looking for agreement or affirmation of what they've just said...Cold out, eh? Good beer, eh?
You know, I work in a call centre where I speak to American guests all the time, I never say eh? unless it's on purpose...and they never know that I am Canadian until I say aboot or progress...
(honestly, I don't even hear the aboot, I'm saying about...or pro-gress, the common North American Prounouciation of this word sounds like Pra-gress, Canadians say Pro-like pro-basketball-gress...watch for it the next time you need to use this word...) |

I'm Canadian too and I catch myself saying it. Last year I went to Florida and I didn't realize but we really do say Eh a lot. We're just so use to saying and hearing it we don't pick up on it. It's funny that people will point it out when your traveling EH! I am proud to be Canadian eh! |

It frustrates me when I hear my fellow Canadians say "Eh?" It's bad enough that most Americans believe that the majority of Canadians add "Eh?" onto the end of a sentence. However, it's worse when I encounter it myself because I can't defend my fellow Canadian then. By the way, Brit's say (or ask) "Eh?" just as much as Canadians, and Americans do as well. You just have to listen for it. People don't notice it possibly because Canada has some how managed to make it a Canadian trait. Way to go. ;) |
