Vancouver Island is the large island off the coast of B.C.
It's separated from Vancouver and the mainland by The Georgia Strait, and can be readily reached by daily passenger ferry service (or plane).
Both city and Island named after early European explorer, Captain George Vancouver.
Victoria, capital of BC - is the largest city on the island, renowned for its "old-style British charm" its very pictaresque, extremely popular with tourists and has the nicest weather in Canada.
Farther up the west coast, Tofino/Ucluelet offer spectacular vistas of the Pacific, amazing nature trails and surfing along Long Beach.
Its a huge Island: mountains, forests, beaches, cities - certainly you could have a wonderful vacation there without ever setting foot on the mainland. |

It's nice. A little different; most of the residents don't get off the island much.
'Up-island' gets weird, in both good and bad ways. There're some isolated hicks who can be a bit scary, and some isolated artist types who can be a bit cool.
Victoria is
-- 'the only old age home with its own bus route'
-- 'more British than Britain'
-- touristy and twee in some regards
-- clean and pretty
-- a bit burdened with social problems (a _bit_ -- it would be nothing elsewhere; it just stands out given the size of the city, and how nice it is otherwise) thanks to the climate; if you're going to be a bum, homeless teen, drunk Native who passes out in doorways, etc, might as well do it where the weather's friendly year-round
-- pretty relaxed
-- somewhat hippie; it's easy to find vegetarian restaurants, craft shops, weed, etc
-- fantastic climate-wise compared to the rest of Canada, though there are arguments to be made in favour of snow
The ferry to the 'mainland' is a nice little trip. Worth checking out Vancouver as well if you're planning a trip. |

Vancouver, especially BC is the cleanest city I've ever been to. It's about as european as it gets without going to europe. The canadian pan handlers are tricky ***** though. And they can spot an American in a bat of an eye. They come up real friendly, and BAM somehow before you know it, you're giving them cash
The Kitsilano area is a great place to check out. Lots of different cultures, art and history. Victoria was neat too.
It does rain a lot, but if you can get over that, it's a gorgeous city nestled between the ocean and the mountains. |
