Does British Columbia get earthquakes?

Does British Columbia get earthquakes? If so how often? Are there volcanoes?

Yes it does. Some places are more prone to them than others but a good part of the earth's surface is potentially in for an earthquake at any time, some more than others. The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program keeps track of and warns people of the various quakes that may affect their area. If I understand it correctly, we often get quakes that we do not notice as they are relatively small. The big ones end up on the nightly news.

If you go to their site,
U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program

You will see Vancouver has several listings for today.

Yes, we do. During my lifetime, there has not been a major quake in BC, but we've experienced a few little ones that were noticeable. Historically, there have been 2 larger quakes on Vancouver Island that caused some damage to early colonial settlements in the last century.

From what I have heard it isn't volcanic activity but fault lines and tectonic shifting that stirs up the quakes locally. We share a couple of fault lines with the US, including the San Andreas and a newly "discovered" line that runs from Victoria south to Port Angeles.

We keep hearing about and waiting for the big one to hit, so most folks and virtually all institutions have earthquake emergency kits. Also, you rarely see large paintings or elaborate light fixtures hung over people's beds. ;)

The subject of earthquakes seems to be covered here but it is untrue that Canada does not have volcanoes. We can and in the past we have had some - mostly on the west coast.

It used to be thought that Mount Royal on Montreal Island was an ancient volcano but that is apparently a myth.

Well I know that some people in BC felt the one that happened recently in California. It wasn't as strong, but they still felt it.
