Although Canada is a member of the Commonwealth and the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth, no, she does not exercise any authority in Canada other than for ceremonial purposes. Queen Elizabeth II, who is still alive and well, is represented on our stamps and coins and is, for ceremonial purposes only, the “Queen of Canada”. We do not contribute financially except when she visits as a guest of the government of Canada. In Canada the duties of the Queen are handled by the Governor General of Canada, who is the Queen’s representative here. On a provincial level the same duties are handled by the Lieutenant Governor of the Province. Both the Governor General and the Lieutenant Governors are appointed by the Prime Minister. The Queen must give her approval but this is only for ceremonial purposes.
The duties of the Governor General (or the Queen if she should happen to be visiting) are:
To open each session of Parliament and to read the Throne Speech (which broadly specifies what actions the current government means to take during the legislative session)
To dissolve Parliament at the request of the Prime Minister if the governing party loses a vote of confidence or at any time the Prime Minister wished to call an election.
To ask a leader of a party to form the next government in the case where no party has a majority or a lead in the number of members elected.
To sign into law bills passed by the Parliament
To represent Canada at events and activities both inside and outside of the country either in conjunction with the Prime Minister or on his behalf if he is not there.
To represent Canada in other events as requested. |

Yes she is still alive and she doesn't "run" Canada
she's mostly just a figurehead as Canada is a country of the Commonwealth much like Australia |

She has never "run" Canada. She is alive, yes. |

No. She doesn't even run England. As queen of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, she's really just a ceremonial figure. The real governing of the UK is done by parliament and the prime minister.
Canada has their prime minister, although they maintain traditional ties with Great Britain which is why her image appears on Candaian currency. The queen appoints a "governor" to Canada, but again it's really just a ceremonial thing. The governor has no real power. |

She doesn't run Canada, but she is the official head of state. She holds the same position in New Zealand, Australia and some territories in the Carribean as well. |

No never has. She is more of a ceremonial figure because Canada use to be a colony of Great Britain waaaaaay back then. |

She does not even run England! The British Monarchs do not really have any political power. They are more-or-less living symbols of a bygone tradition. |

She is alive but she DOES NOT RUN CANADA!! |

She doesn't "run" anything. As a head of state, she mainly performs ceremonial functions. The Queen's Representative in Canada is the Governor General, who is appointed by our elected Prime Minister. The Canadian Parliament, headed by the Prime Minister, basically runs the country. The Governor General, who is currently Michaelle Jean, rubber stamps whatever bills are passed by parliament and makes speeches. Theoretically she has the power to dissolve Parliament, but it's unlikely to happen.
Yes, Queen Elizabeth is still alive. |

Queen Elizabeth is very much alive. She has certain duties and responsibilities with regard to Canada, but they are mostly of a ceremonial nature, so she does not "run" Canada. She is the figurehead of our government, and her representative in Canada is the Governor General. Many Canadians have great respect and affection for the Queen and the royal family. |

She is still alive, and although she doesn't really "run" Canada, she is the head of state, and her agent (the Gov. General) performs a special function. The Queen's purpose is to keep Parliament (House of Commons, specifically) in line... |

ye the queen does rule canada, any country in the commonwealth is ruled by the queen. and as for as people are saying the monarchy do nothing, well .... our future king serves in our army , and so does his 2 sons as a matter of fact, so yes the royal family do something, the queen is like 80 years old, a grandmother, if your grandmother was 80 years old then wtf would u expect her to do? run a marathon? jump on a horse screaming 'FOR ENGLAND AND THE COMMONWEALTH!' no she wont do that because she is just an old women who happens to rule alot of countries.
Look to the future King then ask the same question.
uh does the king do anything?
well after what u been told, what do u all think. |
