Does a US Citizen need a passport to travel to Canada by car?

I'm planning to drive to Canada (from NYC) this winter and need to know what documentation is required. I do not have a valid passport but my wife does. We are both citizens born in the U.S.

Thanks

Passports are not needed to travel to and from Canada by LAND or SEA until after SUMMER 2008. See website below and read top half of the page carefully to see the CURRENT info.

No you don't need it yet, not until 08. Only if your flying.

No, you don't need a passport for traveling by land in either direction until next year, but you will need adequate identification, such as a picture ID (driver's license) and/or citizenship card or birth certificate. That being said, if the date on which you plan to return is AFTER the date on which the U.S. is imposing compulsory passports for travel between Canada and the U.S., you will need a passport to re-enter your country.

justanotherunknown
Currently, no you don't. You need to have your birth certificate and a government issued photo ID.

Sometime later in 2008, the US government will be changing the laws so that you will be required to carry a valid passport.

I don't think that a US citizen needs a passport to enter Canada BUT they will need one to re-enter the US. There is still some doubt as to when the need for a passport will start. I have read conflicting statements in the news and on government web sites. Your best bet is to give US customs a call to see what the entry requirements will be in January
