Does a US permanent resident need a passport to visit Canada by airplane?

I heard that PR card and photo ID were enough.

Its not law yet, but they can give you a hard time without a passport. Make sure you have a birth certificate and photo ID if you don't have a passport. When in doubt, call the airline and ask.

Nope, you need a passport now, it is a pain in the butt. You can go to Canada with just a drivers license, but to get back into the US you need the darn passport.

Yes you need a passport now. I went to Canada for New Years and was not going to take it but thank goodness I did.

Bob_Morin
Bring your passport! You can enter Canada without it, but you cannot go back to the States without it.

smedrik
If you are flying a passport is a good idea. You will need to pass through customs and it is usually a requirement.

Brett
Yep, drivers license is enough. The airline is going to ask you for all kind of ID to get your boarding pass, and that stuff is going to be just fine for customs. The officials at the gate when you get off will likely ask you what your business is in Canada, and they will act all suspicious, but in the end they'll let you through no problem.
