You don't need a passport (yet) to enter the country BY LAND). But you need it to enter BY AIR. Eventually though it will be required (possibly in less than a year, so you might as well get one if you intend to do a bit of travel across borders.)

I don't' think you need one right now due to the inability of the government to keep up with demand. However, you will need one in the future.

not if you have your birth certificate. You need something proving your citizenship to the US - a drivers license does not fulfil this requirement.

Robert gave you the right answer. See website below to read the law for yourself. You do not currently need a passport to go to Canada by LAND, but as early as next Jan. you will. So do as he said and go ahead and apply as it takes several months to get it. See 2nd website for passport info.

that would be so ridiculous! But I recommend getting one if you live in Seattle, so you can easily cross the Canadian border if you need to get out of the country fast! (plus, canada rocks!)
