No. You do not need a passport to go to Canada. Canadian entrance requirements are the same as ever. (government issued photo ID like a drivers license and original birth certificate to show citizenship) It is your return home you need to worry about. (entry or re-entry to USA)
To "enter or re-enter" the USA by air, you require a passport effective January 23, 2007.
To "enter or reenter" the USA by land or water, passport rules go into effect as soon as January 2008. They have been given permission to push this back to June 2009, but there are no plans for this yet.
Some quotes:
Will travellers need a passport to enter or re-enter Canada?
Canadian entry requirements have not changed. If you are Canadian, you do not need a passport to enter or re-renter Canada.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is a new American law that requires, for now, that all AIR travellers, including Canadians, carry a valid passport, or a Nexus Air Card when travelling to the United States from within the western hemisphere including Canada.
Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security requires that airlines demand that traveler present a valid passport, or a Nexus Air Card to board a plane.
The U.S. Government has assured Canada that it is not the intention of WHTI or APIS to prevent Canadians from returning to Canada. |

Not until 2008. Currently a passport is only required for re-entry to the United States via air travel from Canada and Mexico.
Land crossings still only require government issued photo ID, although it is still smart to bring along a certified birth certificate or voter registration card in case there is question about your citizenship. |

US and Canadian citizens crossing the border via car do not need a passport until 2008. The rules may not be the same for other nationalities. Go to www.state.gov and click on Travel & Business for more information. |
