It depends on your method of travel. My wife and I use passports when travelling by car, but only a birth certificate and drivers license is required. I highly recommend having a passport. Less hassle. If you are travelling by public transporation including plane, train, bus, you NEED IT. see below

Soon it will be a requirement.
Get a passport and be done with it.
I think they said by next year passport mandatory.

Passports are not currently required for US citizens traveling to Canada. Be certain, however to take a valid copy of your birth certificate (with a raised seal) and a state issued photo id. You can get across the border with just a photo id, but it's sometimes trickier getting back into the US. You don't want to be the one that US marshalls decide to give a hard time to because you cannot properly verify your citizenship. Within the next 12 months or so, passports will be mandatory for reentry into the US from Canada (as well as Mexico).

Any picture I.D. will get you through Canadian Customs, but getting back to the U.S is a LOT easier if you have a valid Passport, beleive me been there done it!

I believe "whatever" is correct. I am going this summer and have been advised to bring a certified copy of my birth certificate. But that next summer if I want to go (again) I'll need a passport.
