Remembrance Day being only just past, The people that come to mind are WWII War heroes. There are a lot of them for you to chose from. There are 2 from Alberta that I had the great pleasure to know personally. They were P.O.W.s in a camp for Officers who had tried several times to escape from the Nazis. There is a ton of information on almost all of our WWII heroes on the web. The two I knew - they have both since passed away - are Flight Lieutenants Donald S. Thom from Edmonton, Alberta and Don Donaldson from Lethbridge, Alberta. You can find some info here
http://www.colditzcastle.net/british-pows/raf-pow-photos/
If you are in Calgary, there is a book called "Detour" at the Military Museum just off Crowchild Trail South. This book was given to me by Mr. Thom and I in turn gave it to the Museum. There is info in it on both gentlemen. If you are in Lethbridge, you should be able to find the propeller from Mr. Donaldson's plane which was returned to him in the 1990's and is most likely at the Legion in Lethbridge.
Another Canadian who is famous among WWII history buffs is Sir William Stephenson. He was a Master Spy (like James Bond only better - he was real) during the war. He was from Manitoba and had something to do with just about every daring, exciting and scary spy thing done during the war. A book was written about him - you may find it in a library - called "A Man Called Intrepid". I would like to be able to say I knew him but, alas, I didn't. But I sure know all about him. He is one of my own personal heroes and he is one of Canada's National heroes. You can find out more about him here
http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0007701
I know these are not as famous as Celine Dion or Gordie Lightfoot or Wayne Gretsky but they are very important people who should be as famous. There are war heroes in every city and town in Canada. Take a walk over to your nearest cenotaph and read the names there.
If you chose this type of famous person for your assignment, then I hope I have been of some help. And I wish you well on your assignment. |

Sorry. Celine Dion, Terry Fox, Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Graham Bell, Jacques Cartier/explorers, John Garrand (gun maker you probably never heard about that made the most used American rifle in WW2 the Garrand M1. I might have spelled it wrong), Pierre Trudeau (Prime Minister who was equally as charismatic as Obama), Kim Campbell (First Female Prime Minister, a legacy the Americans haven't had yet), and Jean Chretien is all I can think of currently. The answerer Karen C also made me think about Laura Secord from the War of 1812 when she said war heroes. |
