Does anyone know what this sign means £?

that sign is used in reference to money and placed in front of numbers to give you a price. It is used in some country and I would like to know what it would be in american money.

Most of the people answering above are ignorant Americans (not suggesting this is a trait applicable to all Americans, just to many of those anwering above...!) who should limit their replies to topics concerning their neighborhood and hometown, let alone the world...

There is no such thing as the "English Pound" - the currency is the British Pound Sterling or GBP. 1GBP = $1.8987USD, the girl above got it the wrong way round.

An interesting point to note is that that around the British Isles, many different bills (or notes, as we call them in the UK) exist. Certain banks in the UK are authorized to print their own money, but its all "legal tender" under the crown - all the same currency (GBP). You may find yourself holding Clydesdale Bank, Bank of England, NatWest, RBS notes in your wallet at any one time
