Does anyone think they should make it mandatory to have a passport to travel to Canada or the USA?

NO passport needed as of yet. But if they pass this bill both countries will be hurt. Thanks to Bush and Harper, now everyone thinks you need a passport!! Dumb idots.

Even though passports are not needed now for Canadians and Americans to visit each other, the day is coming when they will be needed. I don't think it has anything to do with Stephen Harper and George Bush. It is just a fact of the world we live in. Passports are a fact of life. People will get used to the idea. A passport is a respected document, so I think it is a good idea for international travellers to be required to have one. It shows that they have at least gone through some sort of screening and identification process in their own country.

Best of luck.

The bill was already passed, and even though it's a major pain, I think it's something that we probably should've needed all along. At least we have fair warning, so if we want to go to the States in the future we all need to get our applications in. It doesn't hurt to have a passport, I think it's something everyone should have. And as much as I can't stand Harper and Bush, this is protecting our country probably more than it is the US, and it's also making a statement that YES we ARE 2 different countries. You need a passport to go to any other country, so why not the US?

I do not think it should be mandatory, but having a passport is always good. Even if you don't plan to travel alot, it is a good kind of ID.

THE BILL HAD ALREADY BEEN PASSED IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN COME DECEMBER YOU WILL HAVE TO START TRAVELING WITH ONE FOR SURE IF YOUR GOING ON CRUISES.

well its already manditory. I think its fine why not really! With all thats happening in the world it makes me feel more safe & secure honnestly

?
It will hurt Canada more than the US as far as trade and tourism dollars go. The border towns will feel it ...Americans that regularly come to Canada that do not have passports will likely stop coming. I believe it will take place on 2007 --I was recently in Rochester and did not need passport to cross from Canada to the US.

in short, the law is weak and not thought out.

Eventually, although they dont talk about it, we will all be forced to have national identity cards. Wait and watch.

I don't think it should be mandatory, but they have already passed the bill for it. However, if we were to travel to any other country we would need a passport.

You do need a passport to enter the states...you will need a passport I believe it's either in Dec/06 or Jan/07 to enter Canada...I don't have a problem with it..it's just another piece of ID...what's so difficult about that? Also showing a passport that's all you need...when you fly inside Canada or the States you need two pieces of ID...not a big deal...although cost of a passport is about $80 if I remember it right...which is a bit much...

The bill has already passed. Eventually you will be required to have a passport for all border crossings. You will eventually even need one to fly within the United States. I think that it will be great for border agents because they will have to know the details of one single ID instead of 50 state drivers licenses and 50 states birth certificates. Canada is a foreign country, and we should have a system where you must present a national identification to cross.
