I used to live in Winnipeg for 6 years; half of it in the North End. Did you know that Winnipeg has the largest number of aboriginals outside of the reserves?

There are soooo many crack houses in the neighbourhood if you want to get some hoot, or else phone to have it delivered -- it's dial-a-dealer in Winnipeg. There was a drive-by shooting in the neighbourhood once. And a prostitute was found dead and naked in a back alley dumpster. Anybody remember that? Her name was 'Talia, I was told. I saw here working the corner one morning as I went to the corner store to get groceries. It was raining, she was completely soaked and white as a ghost, and she was shaking like she was sketchin'. Four days later I hear on the news that she was murdered the night after I saw her working the corner.

Indian Posse are north of the railway tracks. Their rival, the Native Syndicate, are south of the railway tracks. In the West End you have Somali gangbangers called the Mad Cowz -- its members had a fallout amongst themselves and some broke away to form the African Mafia. Now both gangs have it out for each other. The West End is a red-light district, just like the North End, except the North End hoes are predominantly Native and the West End hoes are white. And when I lived there, there was a newly invested Hell's Angels chapter in Winnipeg.

Each city has it's dark underbelly -- even pure and clean Winnipeg. You just have to know where to look.

It's an AWESOME city. There is so much to do in terms of arts, culture, and hockey. The science museum is brilliant. I've also found the people to be incredibly friendly.

I don't know anyone that dislikes Winnipeg, if they have actually lived there. The only time I hear anything bad about the Peg is from people who have never been there and they usually think it's a desolate prairie town, with nothing to offer. I LOVE Winnipeg and look forward to the day that I can move back. There aren't that many jobs in Winnipeg, in my field (ecology/reclamation) so I am stuck in Alberta for the time being. GAWD, I would love to get out of here to head back to warm summers, friendly, sincere people and a slower pace of life!
About the 'north end' - I used to live in the University area and always heard bad things about THE NORTH END. now that i live in the 'North End' equivalent in Edmonton, I think one of your responders is right - it's never as bad as people say it is! The good people seem to pull together and make the area a community. Oh, I did live in the Wolsley area before it started to revitalize (back in the early 90s). I think that is one of the neatest areas of the city now - or was last time I was there. It was a pretty vibrant area, even when I lived there! So, it goes to show, areas change!

Cheers!

I've lived in Winnipeg, for five years now and like all of the amenities the city has to offer. I do like it, but I really love going to my home in the country where my parents live. When I go home, I feel free. I feel like I am in a different world because I don't have to be watching my back 24/7. I don't know about the rest of you, but I do think Winnipeg is a dangerous place, depending on what area too. I live in the south end which is considered one of the safest areas, but a former boyfriend and I were both mugged in that area. I suppose just try to be street smart, but also enjoy life for what it is.

Winnipeg is a very nice place and actually I found it was very safe when I lived there a few years back. I did live in the 'North End' which is considered bad - but I found the people there to be warm and friendly. Winnipeg is an extremely friendly city overall - it is a pretty city too with lots of green space - very very flat which I found strange but that's the way it is.

The one thing I didn't like was the stigma the North End of the city has - I don't think it is warranted. I didn't find there was much of a night life in Winnipeg to be honest but it's a good city if you are looking to raise a family.

Yes it is cold in Winnipeg but as long as you are dressed warmly you are fine and don't really feel it - it's a dry cold. Winnipeg is a cowboy town - lots of cowboy hats, country music so if you like that it's cool.

The only thing is that there aren't much jobs in Winnipeg but life is simpler there and cheaper too...

hope this helps...

I don't think it's bad considering I live there. But we do get a lot of bad rep for being one of the coldest place for winter.

Don't you live in Winnipeg? o_O

Yes, it is a lovely little town by the way.

It's kind of chilly in the winter. The skid row stabbings don't have anything to do with the average person in Winnipeg. It's a nice place in a lot of ways.
