Does everyone get hasseled when going through Customs? |
I went to visit a friend of mine last month in Canada. It was my 1st time traveling out of the country, even though it wasn't far (I'm from the US). So I arrive in Canada, follow the signs to Customs, got in the 1st line, which I assume was customs since thats where everyone on my plane went. So I get in line, and the guy looks at my card, then I'm asked "Why am I coming to Canada", I say "To visit a friend", he asked whos your friend, "Friend's name". And then tells me to go to "Immigration". I got kinda confused here, since everyone else was passing through easily and he sends me to Immigration and I'm like ok. So I go to immigration and only me and one other guy that was on the same plane as me were in there. Then I'm called over to the counter and I'm asked all kinds of questions, some personal and such for almost 40mins. So my question is, is it going to be like this everytime I visit Canada? Or this was just a time when they thought I was susipicious or somthing? Additional Details I was coming from the US to Canada. |

It will be easier when you are older. When I first walked across the bridge from Canada to Buffalo at about 19, they gave me the treatment and suggested that most Canadians got deported for getting drunk. I did buy my first bottle of rye there since the drinking age was lower. |

No, you said it yourself not everyone gets the same treatment. So far, I can't complain. |

When you arrive there are generally two lines, one for citizens of the country and one for people from other countries coming into Canada. If you were in the wrong line they may have wondered why and asked you more questions than normal. However it is most likely that you were just one of the "chosen" ones. The same thing happened to me when I was heading down to the US from Canada; I was diverted into a different line from most of the others and went through in a separate area. I personally find it no big deal even if it takes a bit longer. The wait time and questions have increase, especially since 9/11 in all countries. Often they choose a person at random or one is every so many and send them for more questions than normal which is what may have happened to both of us, just going different directions. It is unlikely that this will happen everytime you enter Canada just make sure that you are in the correct line when you arrive. |

I got the same type of treatment when I went to the US to visit a friend in Nashville. I was asked about 30 minutes of questions. It was nuts. I was only going to be there 5 days.
They just pick certain people and decide to hassle them. It doesn't matter which country you are going to or coming from - customs is a pain. |

Canada is a popular place to sneak into, for work (it attracts the more intelligent illegals)
Try going the other direction looking suspicious |

Everybody gets hassled through customs, though from what I hear it's worse for non-Americans coming into America. They have their photos & fingerprints taken, and are often pulled aside and asked many questions.
I am American and have traveled a lot overseas - This past fall going to & coming back from flying around Europe I felt like they were much more invasive than normal. I was even asked a lot of questions coming back to the US via Canada. I think it's pretty normal procedure these days. Annoying for worn-out travelers, though! |
