There are a number of good youth hostels in Vancouver. The youth hostel at Jericho is close to UBC (if that's where you'll be studying). The YWCA also has some rooms.
Hope you enjoy your stay here.

Button Face
I think Jerico Beach Hostel is closed in the winter but check out the Hostel website that is posted on your answers..and a few people who gace you suggestions like the Cobalt Hotel are complete liars ,, I would never let you go to the Cobalt Hotel
You can also do a seaarch for rooms to rent in houses there, some are way cheaper than Hostels
OK

DO NOT STAY AT THE COBALT!

in fact most of the hostels around Vancouver (Cambie, Backpackers, etc) have a severe bedbug infestation going on right now - if you are coming to work and study, you should probably seek out longer-term accommodations anyway..

.. maybe you school can point you in the direction of shared apts or homestayls.. dependiong on where your school is - the West End, Kitsilano are good areas or perhaps the North Shore.. The Commercial Drive area has a large Brazilian population too.

maybe check in w. the local Brazillian assn.,

apt. rentals.
