Down with ignorance!? |
I was recently reading an article written by some obnoxious, pissed off immigrant group who are upset that they can't find a job in canada. While I understand their plight, they should realize THEY are the ones coming into OUR country looking for US to give THEM a better life. They should stop complaining and taking things for granted.
Examples:
5. Very High Taxes.
Yes, you have the GST, the PST, totaling 15%, on practically everything you purchase and many other taxes taken out of our weekly paycheck. You have to pay a whopping amount to the government, out of your hard earned salary, so that the government can turn around and give it to beer drinking, hockey watching welfare bums. Fair? It does not matter, it's Canada.
It's this tax money that is giving us "FREE" health care. I would much rather shell out taxes so that when I get in a car accident I know I wont be put on a waiting list just to see a doctor and then have to pay to have someone save my life. In the states you have to pay for a doctor to tell you to go home and take an Advil. (no offense America. I do love you.)
3. No Culture.
Unlike almost every other country in the world, Canada has no culture. Actually American culture is what dominates Canada. When was the last time you had some 'Canadian' food? There are no Canadian traditions and there is no national identity. What does it even mean to call yourself a 'Canadian'. . .nothing really. People living in Canada, still identify themselves with the country they 'originally' came from.
No culture? NO CULTURE? This one made me really angry. They need to go read a history book or two. Have they not heard of the Acadiens? Canada's beginnings? I'm not even going to get started on this one.
2. Worst Weather.
Yes, Canada has the worst weather conditions of any country in the world. Freezing cold temperatures, snow, ice, hail, winds, storms etc. From the Prairie provinces to the Maritimes, from the Territories to southern Ontario, the weather is so horrific and disgusting that many Canadians leave Canada simply because of this reason alone.
I quite love our weather. You get the best of both worlds. It's hot hot hot in the summer so you get all the benefits of the south, while it's cold and snowy in the winter so you get the north in there too. What more could you want?
So, my question to you is, who find this extremely offensive and thinks something should be done about these immigrant crusaders? Additional Details Ah, sorry I forgot the link.
And no, I'm not saying it's all immigrants who say this or that it's only immigrants. However the ones saying these things happen to be a group of immigrants.
Give me a moment to retrieve the link for you. |

First of all, you aren't citing your sources so it's impossible for us to have any context to what they said or know if you're twisting their words.
Second of all, even if a small group of immigrants does think this, you're the one being ignorant if you think that all immigrants do nothing but whine about being here. All the immigrants I know love Canada and have worked themselves to the bone since arriving just to get by. There are lots of Canadians who would make the same claims you're arguing against, so it's not really about immigrants or born-citizens... it's about negative whiners who aren't doing anything to better their government/country.
People shouldn't have to see their tax money go up in flames supporting a healthcare system that (although it's socialized) is still woefully inadequate. However, I agree that complaining about bad things, ignoring good things, and doing nothing to change anything at all is unproductive and self-indulgent. I just don't think it's appropriate to claim that only immigrants do this - from personal experience I know a whole lot more armchair-critics who were born in Canada than immigrants who are usually too busy working to whine. |

Well, now that you have flown off you handle...do you feel better now?
A could of things you need to understand yourself: First, everyone in this country is entitled to express their opinion, in much the same way you are doing right now. Not everyone will agree with that they have to say in much the same reason that not everyone will agree with what you have to say.
Secondly, there is no need to let one persons opinion, or the opinion expressed on their amateur website (yes, I know the post you are talking about and I saw their website) get to you in the way it has. They (whoever "they" are) and their opinions are in no way a threat to Canada or to Canadians and any reasonable person will know that their rantings are just the goings on of disgruntled whiners who either couldn't make a go of it here or who came here with unrealistic expectations. All you have done yourself is take the bait and let them get to you for NO reason what so ever. I would really have hoped that you (and "we) are bigger then that but perhaps I was wrong.
Do I think anything should be done? Certainly not. I don't view these people as "immigrant crusaders" in any way but see them for what they are, whiners with nothing better to do with their time. Just let it go, take a deep breath and relax. |

I don't think it matters so much as to who said it, it's garbage. I do find it odd though that people would move here and then complain about it. If they moved once they can move again, right? Maybe third country's the charm.
The only qualms I have with Canada have to do with the growing political similarities to America. No, I don't hate America.
And I agree with you 100% on the weather. I live in southwestern Ontario. Love the summer. Love the spring. Love the fall. Love the winter. I wouldn't have it any other way. |

You are in denial. We pay taxes that are almost as high as in a European welfare state work longer and get none of the services. And until a month ago I money was being deducted off my paycheck for my "free" health care and the insurance to supplement my "free" health care. Which the last time I used required a six hour wait, it was a chunk of metal in my eye.
I would not say that we have no culture. It's just that Canadian culture is something we are too embarrassed to show to outsiders. The national culture consists of beer, hockey and using British spelling and a few words from Quebec. Plus a few myths made up by politicians to lessen the pain of screwing us. That's why people hang onto the culture of their ancestors.
The only country with worse weather than Canada is Russia. Canada used to have the worst weather in the world but the warm parts of the Soviet Union separated in the early 90s. |
