Hi Guys,
Am going to Canada for the summer, and was wondering how old you had to be to hire a car, and how long you had to be driving for?
Thanks |

Okay, you will need the following:
1) A valid driver's license. It needs to be a full license and not a temporary license, learner's permit or graduated license. As an American you should be able to drive on your own license but you might need to get an International Driving Permit from your local AAA. I'd check with the individual rental companies about this however.
2) You need to be an adult and it's a good thing to be covered under your own car insurance. If you're under 25 and have no insurance a lot of places will not rent you a car or will place restrictions on what kind of car you can rent. Again, check the companies, they might have different restrictions for you.
3) A valid credit card. No credit card = no car.
4) Getting back to insurance, if you have it see if you can cover a rental car with it. The first time I rented a car I took what they offered and it was about $15 a day which really was expensive. Everytime after that I used my own insurance company and it worked out to less than a dollar a month in premiums. |

From my experience, living in Canada and having to rent a car, they required me to 23 years of age and have a full liscence. That is, if your country had a graduated liscening system, you must have completed it. I have definately never seen a car rented to people under 21 in Canada. I tried going through Enterprise's site as a 18-20 year old and here was my response.
Our Apologies
Many of our locations have age restrictions.
For our underage customers
Unfortunately, due to your age we will be unable to rent you a vehicle.
Thank you for choosing Enterprise Rent-A-Car and we look forward to serving you in the future.
As a 21-24 year old, it worked fine. |

You have to be 18 (that means you are an adult, in Canada) and you have to have a valid driver's license. A full license, not a learner's or new driver's, but a full license.
Watch the road signs when you're in Canada as they are in kilometers, not miles, so when it's 80km, make sure you aren't doing 80mph or you're going to be inviting traffic tickets. |

I have rented plenty of cars in Canada. You need to have a full driver's license (not a learner's permit), and be 18 years of age. However, if you are under 25, for insurance purposes there may be restrictions on what type of vehicle you can rent (you may not be able to rent trucks, SUV's, convertibles, sports cars, etc.).
I've found that Enterprise tends to beat out almost all other car rental companies in both price and service, and have rented from them many times.
Edit to add: I just read Wyzard's response, and perhaps Enterprise has changed their policy (I rented from them at the age of 20 back in 1999), or I went through a branch that didn't have the age restriction. It's worth a try... good luck! |

21 years. You can drive with an international driving license as well as most of the European country licenses. |

You have to be 16 to get your license. Then you got to be driving for a year after that to drive alone. You have to be driving for 4-6 years before you can get the full privileges to drive. |

I would expect its driving for three years and 21 or over. The reason being most car hire firms are multinational like AVIS is everywhere and also easycar or easyhire whatever that is called. Canada is also a member of the old commonwealth and still has the queen on all its bank notes so Im guessing a lot of things like that will be pretty similar. |

It depends on where you're travelling to and who you're renting from. Some firms will rent to you if you're 21, others will rent to you only if you're over 25. And firms differ from province to province. If you're between 21 and 25 with a credit card you should be okay. If you're under 21 with a credit card you might be able to find a rental. If you're under 21 without a credit card think you might be out of luck. |
